Sometimes I am a bit dissociative when in an emotional situation. XYZ is happening, but I’m more observer than participant. For example, I woke up from a minor procedure done as an outpatient in a clinic, muddle-headed, throat parched, dazed by the lights. It was a normal reaction to a mild anesthetic. As I rested, getting my wits back about me, I was thinking, “How can I use this in a story#8221; I started “rewriting” the experience as if I were a character in a book, studying the sensations and marking their progress as I continued to wake. That type of behavior in other situations has helped me nail some great character descriptions.
